Candle making is not only easy to do, but is also a great deal of fun. Various candle-making kits and equipment are available from craft shops, but by following these handy tips you can create beautiful candles with minimal hassle and expense.

Firstly, it is advisable to use newspaper to protect your surfaces against spillages. Akin to melting chocolate, you need to break up the wax, whether it be soy wax, beeswax or paraffin wax, and melt the pieces in a bowl placed over a boiling pan of water. As wax can ignite when overheated, do not melt the wax directly over a naked flame. For coloured candles, add a drop of colouring agent, and for scented candles simply add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

Place a wick into your selected mould, ensuring that you leave a few centimetres of excess at the top for lighting the finished candle. Wrap the top end around a peg and lay this across the top of the mould to hold the wick in place. Carefully pour the melted wax into the mould. Air bubbles get trapped in the wax, so every few hours you need to break the skin on the top of the candle with a fork to release the bubbles. The wax will then sink as the air is removed, so top the mould back up with more melted wax.

Leave your candles to set for up to twelve hours then transfer them to the fridge for another twelve hours. When the wax has completely set, you can tap the candle out of the mould and trim the wick to about half a centimetre in length. Always leave your candles to sit for another twenty-four hours before lighting them.
Don’t be put off if you think it’s going to be a lot of effort – candle making is far simpler than you would expect it to be.

With children’s room, you’ll often find that despite your bests efforts, it’s still a real challenge to prevent them from being filled up with toys and such. Even if you ask that your child clears everything up directly after they play with their things, the problem won’t be fixed unless there’s a specific place that they can put everything. When you think about it, it makes sense. For example, you might ask that a corner of the room should be where they put all of the toys that they’re not playing with. When Christmas or their birthday comes around and that pile gets a bit bigger, how long will it be before that all spills out to the middle of the room? Dedicated toy storage is your best way to prevent these problems from coming about.

You can get all sorts of different forms of toy storage, but the most common ones tend to be the old traditional toy box. It really depends on your personal tastes and that of your children, as to the choice that you’re going to opt for. Oftentimes, you’ll find that the old methods are usually the most effective, but it might depend on the way that your child’s bedroom is set out. For example, some might find that it will be more effective if they put the toys on shelves above head height, so that they’re less of them on the ground.

One of the great things about some of the toy boxes that you can find from established children’s furniture retailers like GLTC is that they can be stacked on top of each other. This means that you can double the amount of storage without really taking up much space in the room, as it will all be confined to the same corner of the room. Having this sort of storage will make it far easier for your children to care for their things and put them away at the end of the day, because they will have a specific place where they are meant to go, rather than just a region of the room.

It seems as though these days you’re really slipping behind if you haven’t got the latest tech, because there’s always someone trying to show off that they’ve got the latest version of everything – leaving others lagging behind. However, you wouldn’t end up in that position if you knew exactly where you needed to go to find information on what’s due to hit the market and is likely to get a lot of people excited. One of the most buzzed about home gadgets that has got people talking recently is the smart TV and more specifically the Apple TV, which is due to take the whole experience of watching television into a completely new world. So what is it all about and how can you be a part of it all then? Well that’s what we’re here to clarify. There’s a lot of jargon with innovative technology, so here’s a run through of the features you should expect out of smart TVs and why they will soon be a must-have for every home in the near future.

The idea of smart TVs is that they give you the chance to carry out all the sort of functions that you’d get out of your other computerised devices, but from a larger screen. For example, you can view the Apple TV as something which is able to transform your television into aiPad-like experience, filled with multiple applications, from which you can carry out all the sorts of tasks that you’d only ever e able to do from a tablet device or your phone. If you wanted to, you could tweet from it, for example. On top of that, some of them give you the opportunity to do things like stream programming and store films and TV shows from your screen, in a similar way to what you can already do on your computer. It’s about giving you more options, so the TV isn’t just something that only really serves a single function.

So are you ready for TVs like this? Do you still need more convincing, before you decide to spend money on something like this? It will be interesting to see if people catch onto the trend.

In a vastly competitive and self aware home market, sometimes it’s hard not to get caught up in the race to renew or replace furniture of old. With lavish new designs each year from table chairs, luxurious sofas and other home decor, often we all wish to evoke that balance that makes a home feel the warmth and lived in nature that a family and friends can enjoy.

Recently however, due to an ever present expensive modern lifestyle, these living room centrepieces have taken to the sleek lines of old including the “lived in” feeling which is all too literal with them. These echoes of the past have been lovingly revived or restored breathing new life into the subtle tone of a living room and, while not only being quirky have also lightened the mood. These retro sofas have made a stunning comeback.

In years past it was only popular to have such retro furniture only if you had an appropriate era-themed room or house, but due to changing tastes and trends, including a forward outlook, the “everything old is new” attitude has seen value in a return to past designs, styles and also gives us the chance to experience the fond memories of that one centrepiece that was used many years ago.

As modern attempts at retro designs appear on the market, it only serves to give rise to the value of what’s at home, yet lacks the nostalgia and years of loving use of older furniture. With sofas especially, either due to budgetary concerns or just a stylistic choice, these revived pieces from eras past will merge with any living room decor, and even give your guests something to talk about in the mean time.

Make no mistake; these established retro designs are here to stay.

Adding a fireplace to any home creates a definite focal point, but as with anything, there is a cost implication. Here, it is hoped to provide some affordable fireplace ideas.

Fireplaces can be positioned in a variety of locations within a room, though typically are along a main, feature wall or even in a corner of the room. Shelving around a fireplace could provide a sensible and yet stylish option to store logs.

Choosing brick, stone, tiles or slate to create a fireplace can be tailored for a variety of cost budgets. Mosaic tiles give the added potential to create a more personal design, which could transform a fireplace into a real gem.

Paint is a very sensible option for affordable fireplaces. Tired, old bricks could simply be painted to bring them back to life, or alternatively plaster can be painted to create a faux marble effect, which can look and feel like real marble. Faux finishes can also be made to look like wood, stone, or brick. Bold, painted plaster around perhaps a mosaic tiled area, can also look very striking and relatively inexpensive.

There is no rule saying a mantelpiece is required, but if choosing a mantelpiece, then once again there are several options such as staining a piece of pine wood to look more expensive, or even painting or applying tiles or slate to inexpensive wood. If the property is beside the sea, it may be possible to find a piece of driftwood for the mantelpiece and maybe even decorate the fire surround with shells.
If no mantelpiece is required, then it could be made quite striking by insetting the fireplace into the wall a little and positioning LED type lights in the recess.

Hopefully, the above suggestions will assist in the creation of an affordable fireplace.

While you’re sure to have noticed this already in many different ways, it’s worth noting that the world is getting more open to game-like manipulation than ever before. As time goes on, more and more varieties of ways to navigate through the world in a more electronic manner keep springing up, and it’s great for those who are into their video games. What we’re seeing as these things progress and certain breakthroughs take hold is that game makers are making their products far more immersive and this is just adding more fuel to the fire, for those who want to continue to make the environment feel, overall, more fun. Recently, we’ve found out that Microsoft aren’t quite satisfied that we’ve taken things as far as they can go, so have made up for it by working with Samsung on the IllumiRoom.

So what does it have to offer? Well, if you saw the Wii as a massive innovation in the way that gaming took a turn over the past decade, prepare yourself for an even bigger step for gaming technology with the IllumiRoom. Although there are only a few details on it so far, the idea is that your room is able to become part of the scenery to your game. It dramatically increases to depth to your experience as, suddenly, it’s not just all focused on the TV. The TV is just the centre-point to everything which is going on around you, and you will be able to get far more of an engaged experience when you’re playing your Xbox – which this is geared towards.

Using just the Kinect and a projector, it’s able to get a feel for the room that you’re playing in and adapt the surroundings to make full use of the environment that you’re playing in. It’s an extension of the image that won’t fit on the TV screen, so you feel as though you’re even more a part of what’s going on inside the game and that it’s not just you sat at the sofa pressing a load of buttons and staring blankly ahead of you. You’ll now be able to see everything which is going on around you and play accordingly.
